“Some form of football has been played in England for hundreds of years. Today, with an estimated four billion fans, it’s easily the world’s most popular sport.

English football is still acknowledged as the true home of the sport (albeit with strong dissent from the Scottish, who claim to have invented the passing game).

Women’s football is now the fastest-growing sport in England and in several other leading football nations. There are now 211 nations affiliated to FIFA (football’s world governing body), compared with 193 full members of the United Nations.

You may have heard other nations calling the game ‘soccer’.

Depending on which source you believe, that was a nickname hatched by pupils at Harrow School during the 1880s in order to distinguish the new association game from their older pursuit, known as ‘footer’.

‘Soccer’ may also have been coined by Charles Wreford-Brown, a former pupil at Charterhouse public school, to distinguish it from ‘rugger’.

Over the last 150 years and more, it is the English form of football that has undeniably scored the highest in the popularity stakes.

‘A simple game’, as the former Tottenham Hotspur player Danny Blanchflower once put it, ‘made complicated by those who should know better’.”
